Who is this laptop for?

The XPS 15 9520 is one of the most searched-for used premium laptops, and people keep asking us whether it’s good for AI. Honest answer: it’s a gorgeous 2022 all-rounder — CNC aluminium, optional 3.5K OLED, excellent speakers — whose RTX 3050 Ti is capped at 45 W, well below what the same GPU gets elsewhere. It can do entry-level AI. It was never designed to.

🎓 Students (Budget: £600–£850)

If your course is design, media or general CS with some AI on the side, this is a lovely machine that also runs SD 1.5 and small LLMs. If AI is the main event, the same money buys a Legion 5 Gen 6 with 6 GB VRAM and half the glamour — and roughly 4× the sustained AI throughput.

As a primary AI machine: no. As the beautiful laptop you write code and papers on while real work runs elsewhere (a desktop, a server, the cloud, or an eGPU): entirely reasonable, and the 12th-gen i7 with DDR5 makes CPU-side data work pleasant.

AI Performance in Practice

The story of this laptop is one number: 45 W. The RTX 3050 Ti in the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 runs the same silicon at a substantially higher power budget; Dell prioritised thinness and acoustics, and the GPU pays. Estimated from comparable 45 W 3050 Ti results (we have not benchmarked this exact unit): SD 1.5 needs 35–50 seconds per 512×512 image — versus roughly 25–35 s for the X1 Extreme, and 8–12 s for a 6 GB RTX 3060 machine.

LLM work fares relatively better because the bottleneck is memory, not watts: with ~20 of 32 layers of a 7B Q4 model on the GPU, expect 12–18 tok/s. The 14-core Alder Lake CPU with dual-channel DDR5 is a genuinely strong CPU-inference base — 13B Q4 at 3–4 tok/s with 32 GB+ RAM is usable for patient, non-interactive tasks. The Gen 4 SSD loads multi-gigabyte models noticeably faster than the Gen 3 fleet machines we review.

Thermal behaviour

CPU and GPU share the same modest heatpipe budget, so sustained combined loads force a negotiation: run SD 1.5 in a loop and you’ll watch the GPU hold ~45 W while the CPU sheds clocks, palm rest warming past comfortable. Ten-minute bursts are fine; the machine visibly dislikes hour-long batches. The upside is acoustics — even flat out, it’s quieter than any gaming laptop we’ve reviewed.

Battery life under AI load

The 86 Wh cell delivers superb general-use endurance (8–10 h IPS, less on OLED) but AI drains it in the usual way: roughly 1.5 hours of continuous inference. 130 W USB-C charging means one cable for everything — genuinely convenient.


What to Check Before Buying (Used)

Confirm the dGPU exists at all. Base 9520 configs (typically i5) shipped with Iris Xe integrated graphics only. Verify “RTX 3050 Ti” in Device Manager or the Dell service-tag lookup — never trust the listing title.

OLED burn-in (3.5K panels) Display a full-screen mid-grey image and look for ghosted taskbars or window edges. OLED units that spent three years with a docked taskbar can show it. IPS FHD+ panels dodge this entirely and gain 2 h of battery.

Battery health powercfg /batteryreport — and specifically check for swelling: XPS 15 batteries are a known swelling generation, and a trackpad that clicks oddly or a bottom panel that doesn’t sit flush is the tell. Replacements ~£70–£90.

GPU throttling test FurMark + HWiNFO for 15 minutes: healthy units hold a steady 43–45 W GPU. If it seesaws below 35 W, the shared cooling is compromised (paste or dust). While there, listen for coil whine — this model is famous for it, and it’s luck of the draw.

Storage health CrystalDiskInfo: 0 reallocated sectors. The second M.2 slot (present in the 9520) is a cheap model-drive upgrade path.

Model-specific issues to watch for Test the webcam and Wi-Fi after resume from sleep (known driver grumbles, usually fixed by updates), check all four USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, and confirm the correct 130 W USB-C charger is included. The keyboard’s double-press issue from earlier XPS generations is rare on the 9520 but type a paragraph anyway.

eBay UK — where the i9/32 GB/OLED unicorns live. Standard rules: 100% feedback, returns accepted, photos of the actual unit, and ask directly about coil whine and battery swelling.

What to avoid: i5/Iris Xe configs sold at dGPU prices, OLED units without burn-in photos, and the near-identical XPS 15 9510 (2021, 11th-gen CPU) appearing in 9520 searches at 9520 prices.

AI Score: 58/100 — SD Ready (entry level)

The XPS 15 9520 is a wonderful laptop and a mediocre AI machine, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Its 45 W RTX 3050 Ti trails every other 4 GB machine we’ve reviewed in sustained throughput, and 4 GB VRAM shuts the door on SDXL, FLUX and fine-tuning. But as a premium daily driver that can also transcribe with Whisper, run SD 1.5 and offload a 7B model — while looking and sounding better than anything else on this site — it has a real place.

Buy if: you want one beautiful machine for writing, media and coding, with light local AI as a bonus — and you’d rather run heavy jobs remotely anyway.

Don’t buy if: tokens per second or images per hour are how you’ll measure this purchase. The same £700 buys a Legion 5 Gen 6 that embarrasses it at every AI task.

Better alternatives: the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4 (£620–£880) runs the same GPU faster in a similarly premium body; the HP ZBook Studio G8 (£580–£800) adds real 6 GB VRAM capability in a quiet workstation.
